He was given the Shikigami Madougu from his father when he turned 14 and has utilized it since then. He was taught to only fight in the defense of others and never for his own gain. He was trained every day of his life to defend the honor of Clan Kuu as well as respect for all people of Japan. He was told that if he ever raised a fist against another, it must have a reason and never be out of spite or vengeance. To this end, he learned how to manipulate paper to use as a shield against blows and as a weapon to protect others. Likewise, he was taught how to fight even without Shikigami, in the event that he could not use it for whatever reason. He trained his body and mind to be both graceful and accurate, so that his blows landed only where they needed to.
